Design Project A: Final Look At The RSA Project-2

After a semester of working finally RSA project is over. However I couldn't feel really done until I post my boards to the blog. When I was preparing my boards I thought that my booklet is crowded enough that is why I choose to prepare them as simple and intelligible as possible. So I use white back ground and just a couple of necessary information on the boards. Moreover with the sketch book, since I my work is already about making a booklet, I didn't want to make it like book I just take some pictures which shows my process and use some of my maps and I tie them with a simple string. While I was working on the third board I couldn't use my original layout it is because I want present the related pages together, so I have played with the original layout a little. And after I created my packaging I started to think this project more a like "What Do We Throw Away Pack" rather than a simple booklet. Consequently, I am happy with my progress and final results, I really hope that we all get great grades for this semesters work.

My first board, also the cover of my booklet.

My second board, the first section is more about informing people.

My third board and second section of the booklet which is for inspiring readers.
My fourth board, a campaign without a web page and an app is unthinkable today.

Design Project A: Final Look At The RSA Project-1

I didn't prefer to prepare my sketch book like a real book it is because my RSA project was already a booklet itself. Therefore I use some of the pictures I took during I manufacture the ideas and most pf my maps. Manufacturing the ideas-especially the umbrella skirt-was so much fun, I always love to see my ideas coming to life. However I am happy that first semester is over, and hope the second semester is going to be as fun and as challenging as the first one.

A sample from my sketch book "the umbrella skirt" was so much fun to do!

I find the right suitcase at the very last minute and breaking it is harder than it looks.

I think that the shirt bag is creative and playful.

I love the card pick because it is very innovative and easy to do!

Design Project A: Layouts For My RSA Project

Originally after I build my concept, context and minifesto, I worked a bit on the layouts of my book and web page. Therefore I develop three design concepts but each of them are quiet similar it's because I started to have very specific ideas about the project.

First concept for "What Do We Throw Away".

The notion behind the first book cover I make is to illustrate the title of "What Do We Throw Away" as strong as possible for the audience. Moreover the picture of the garbage pale is going to be at the second page thus I will carve the image of the rubbish bin from the card board to show the second page. Besides Peter give me the best idea while I was presenting my work to use this carving idea as page dividers. Therefore I will use this kind of images carved from card board for each section with different objects, that I want to make disappear. The size I am using is B5 and I will be as green as possible with the whole printing process in order to serve the spirit of the project.

The second concept of my project.

After my presentation today, I started to feel like this cover was like a air bag for me. It is simple, it didn't convey many ideas and it is more like a real book that you can see every book store. Not using this will be leaving my comfort zone for me. However I do like the pattern of the cover which is the inside of a real garbage container. After I took the picture, I blend it a little to not to make it look very sharp. And the result is this. Ps. Some of the pictures didn't belong to me.

The most graphic cover of my project.

I develop this cover to grab attention with a more graphic and individual way. As I build the context of my book I was planing to re-arrange the icons I used on the cover to be more narrative about the context. Moreover this cover can allow me to save great deal of energy with the printing because it is only one color and I can use mono-printing machine which is the oldest and greenest one of all the printers.

First sample for the internal pages.

While I was working on this concept my aim was to make it useful, simple and communicational. Therefore I used a very simple image of a person who is riding a bike and illustrate the manual of my idea in a very explanatory way. Originally I am planing to use three main sections for each of ideas; The Problem, The Solution and To Start With. The problem will deliver basic and true information about each problem I handle in my book and with the solution section my aim to teach people how to catch a fish instead of giving one. Basically I am hoping to convey information about other options besides my solution to my audience. And the last section I will use my illustrations to describe people how to manufacture the ideas I developed. Thus I will work on this section more to improve it to the top level.

The second concept for internal pages.

The web page and the Iphone application are the two most strong tools for my campaign. Therefore people will reach the book via web and their smart phone to download it. So except a couple of samples the book is not aimed to be printed, it is a virtual device for reading it with Ipad or on computer. Furthermore I don't want this campaign to have any kind of profit motivation so I will make everything free to inspire people by setting an example with the notion of giving a service people in exchange of participation and attention.

Review Of The Design For The Real World: Human Ecology And Social Change, By Victor Papanek

Part One How It Is: First Chapter-What Is Design: A Definition Of the Function Complex
Advertising, in persuading people to buy things they don’t need with the money they don’t have, in order to impress others who don’t care, is probably the phoniest field in existence today. (Preface to the first edition – page ix)
As long as design concerns itself with confecting trivial “toys for adults”, killing machines with gleaming tailfins, and “sexed-up” shrouds for typewriters, toasters, telephones, and computers, it has last all reasons to exist. (Preface to the first edition – page x)
Design within a social context.
In clothing the need for security-through-identity has been prevented into role-playing. The consumer can now act out various roles by appealing caparisoned in Naugahyde boots, pseudomilitary uniforms, lumberjack’s shirts, various types f “survival gear,” and all the other outward trappings of Davy Crockett, a Foreign Legionnaire, Cossack Hetman, or John Wayne. (Page 16)
All of these plastic wraps are carefully designed and manufactured, as are the pseudofood served therein and the fake redwood structures that sell tese quick meals. The consequences are disastrous. (Page 25)

RSA: Student Design Awards 10/11: My Very First Task With My Point of View

My very first task as a Postgraduate student is designing a social related project for RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts) Student Design Awards. There are a lot of challenging choices in this category, such as sustainability, high quality public design and educating young people about design but I’m going to pick the “altruism/charity”.

I’ve read all the briefs and research about all the topics and charity seems like the biggest problem of all. In such a country like Britain; recession is not an effective problem, despite of global crisis people still donate money on charities. As I observe, the reason is educational level is much higher than other countries so people can comprehend the importance of helping others. Yet business and corporations effected from global crises more than individuals, so they continue to trim donations to charitable and community work to concentrate on core profit-making activities.

Eventually, I believe the real problem is to understand the benefits of charitable behaviour. And to assimilate the importance of charity, people should witness the harsh circumstances of famine. Because I strongly believe that charity foundations should not ask people for help, as human beings it’s our first job to help other unfortunate one’s. Therefore I am thinking on a project called “Give It up: for a Day”. I am still thinking about the framework, but so far I think about the first basis of the project that people can give up their luxuries for a day to be in unfortunate people’s shoes. For instance: cars, mobile phones, fancy dinners or expensive clothes… Anybody can survive without these kinds of luxuries in their life, just for a day. I like this idea because I did not require anything and people can join this process from all around the world. And they can make a donation to a charitable event that they pick with the money they collect in one day. As I said I’m still brainstorming about the idea so it’s just blueprint from my imagination, for now…
